Public Disruption / Private Powers

PUBLIC DISRUPTION / PRIVATE POWERS was a socially engaged curatorial project produced with the support of the Brooklyn Museum Educational Department and CUNY's Performance and Interactive Media Arts Program in May 2015.

A collaboration between the youth subway dance artists WeLiveThis and artists Jackie Danziger and Rebecca Posner, the project explored the play of power, identity, and spectatorship inherent in public disruption and illicit creative expression. The "X-Train" was a fictional alternative transportation experience constructed in the museum's elegant Beaux Arts Court for the unsanctioned and controversial subway performances of the NYC-based dancers.

The X-Train

The X-Train was inspired by the aspirational vision of the We Live This dancers and based on the aesthetics of the NYC subway system. X-Train signage and entry cards invited visitors to explore their own aspirational and transgressive desires.
